Brazil confirm 2022 World Cup squad: Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino out, Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli in

Brazil’s 26-man squad for the 2022 World Cup has been confirmed, with Liverpool’s Robert Firmino out but Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli included.

Firmino was included in Brazil’s final squad for September’s international friendlies against Ghana and Tunisia but did not play from the bench and has not played for his country since last year’s Copa America.

Martinelli, who scored five goals to help Mikel Arteta’s side win the Premier League, is alongside Gabriel Jesus in Tite’s selection, but Arsenal team-mate Gabriel Magalhas misses out.

Manchester United’s Anthony – who posted a video on social media of the moment he found out – and Tottenham striker Richarlison, who has scored 17 goals in his opening 24 appearances for his country, are also in Neymar’s line-up.

Brazil is the most successful team in the history of the World Cup and is going to Qatar as the favorite team of the tournament and the best team of FIFA.

They are unbeaten in CONMEBOL qualifying but have gone beyond the quarter-finals just once since winning in Japan in 2002.

Tite, who will step down after the tournament, will oversee the Group G games against Serbia on November 24, before his team face Switzerland on November 28 and Cameroon on December 2.

Tite signed his 26-man squad for the World Cup at the CBF headquarters in Rio. The 61-year-old claimed he was confident of 20 players but needed September’s internationals and a couple of scouting trips to England and Italy over the past fortnight to help out the others.

Legendary full-back Dani Alves, who now plays for the Pumas in Mexico, made it despite being nearly 40 years old. In central defense, Tite selected Serie A defender of the year Gleeson Bremer to compete with Marquinhos, Thiago Silva and Eder Militão. He is one of three Juventus players who will feel right at home when Brazil take part in a pre-tournament training camp at the club’s training ground in Turin next week.

Bremer was promoted to Arsenal’s Gabriel Magalhas for the last centre-back position. The other Gabriels of Mikel Arteta’s team will be on the plane to Italy. The absence of Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli from the final warm-up games against Ghana and Tunisia in September caused consternation at the time, but both will be in Qatar.

Martinelli is the main beneficiary of Philippe Coutinho’s injury at Aston Villa and deserves to be included in the 26-man squad. Along with Anthony, Rafinha, Vinicius Jr. and Rodrigo, he will be one of the exciting options for Seleção.

Richarlison is expected to be the designated replacement for Brazil in the front line with Pedro Flamengo. The top scorer of the Copa Libertadores took advantage of his chance in the last warm-up game against Tunisia and will move to Turin from Liverpool at the expense of his team-mates Gabigol and Roberto Firmino.
