Senegal World Cup squad: News and analysis ahead of team announcement

Senegal, the Africa Cup of Nations champions, will be hoping to progress from Group A, which includes the Netherlands, Ecuador and host nation Qatar.

The side has World Cup pedigree, although this was only their third appearance at the sport’s biggest tournament. In 2002 they shocked the world by beating France fans and reaching the last eight, although they were disappointed to exit the group stage in 2018, despite beating Poland in their opening game.

Aliou Cisse has a lot of talent to call upon. Sadio Mane is their best player and record goalscorer, while Watford striker Ismaila Sarr is poised to win his 50th international cap despite being just 24.

Ten players in Cisse’s latest international squad are based in England, with most of his players based in Europe.

Cisse will probably be concerned about the recent form of Chelsea duo Kalidou Koulibaly and Edouard Mendy, however. Mendy lost his place in Graham Potter’s squad to Kepa Arrizabalaga while captain Koulibaly is clearly still adjusting to the Premier League after his move from Napoli.
