Tottenham Hotspur 1-1 Sporting Lisbon: Late VAR drama denies Harry Kane winner

Rodrigo Bentancor’s equalizer helped Spurs avoid a third straight defeat in all competitions

After being denied victory in a dramatic final against Sporting Lisbon, Tottenham will be looking for a point in Marseille in their final Champions League group game to progress to the knockout stages.

Spurs knew victory would guarantee a place in the last 16, but they held on for long periods before Harry Kane’s last-gasp strike was ruled out for offside and manager Antonio Conte was red-carded in the ensuing chaos.

In a tense encounter, former Spurs youngster Marcus Edwards punished Conte’s side with a fine low shot in the 22nd minute for a lackluster display from the home fans.

Spurs were much improved after the break, but they were grateful to Hugo Lloris for a crucial save from Sporting substitute Nazininho, who also headed wide.

They capitalized on those two escapes as Rodrigo Bentancor headed home from a corner with 10 minutes remaining – and both sides had chances to win in a thrilling finish.

Kane thought he almost stole it with the last kick – only for VAR to decide otherwise.
