Former India captain Virat Kohli was among those who wished KL Rahul to join the ever-growing group of married players in the national team.
Sending his love to KL Rahul and Athiya Shetty, Virat Kohli posted “congratulations” on the social network with three heart emojis.
Suryakumar Yadav also joined Virat Kohli in wishing the super lovable couple and wrote: “Congratulations to the most beautiful, KL Rahul and Athiya Shetty. Best wishes for the most important partnership of your life.”

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise captained by KL Rahul, wished the pair: “Heartiest congratulations to Captain KL Rahul and Athiya Shetty from the entire Super Giants family. May your partnership always flourish.”
Bollywood actress Athiya Shetty and India wicketkeeper batsman KL Rahul tied the knot in a quiet ceremony at Khandala on Monday.
KL Rahul and Athiya Shetty confirmed their marriage on Twitter and Instagram respectively. The couple wrote, “In your light, I learn how to love…Today, with our dearest, we are married in the home that has given us so much joy and peace. With hearts full of gratitude and love, we seek your blessings on this journey of unity.”
Athiya Shetty is the daughter of actor Sunil Shetty and has acted in many films. The couple has been in a relationship for over five years.
KL Rahul and Athiya Shetty got married at a scenic farmhouse in Khandala, owned by the latter’s father Sunil Shetty. Sunil Shetty confirmed the news of their marriage on Sunday.
Before KL Rahul and Athiya Shetty posted their wedding photos on social networks, Sunil Shetty confirmed that the two are engaged. KL Rahul and Athiya Shetty’s wedding was attended by some of the biggest names in the world of cricket and film.
Cricket stars spotted enjoying the festivities included KL Rahul’s India teammates, Ishant Sharma and Varun Aaron. Meanwhile, his other teammates could not join him as they were busy preparing for the third ODI against New Zealand to be played at the Holkar Stadium in Indore on Tuesday.
KL Rahul was not included in the squad for the New Zealand series due to personal reasons, which eventually led to his marriage to Athiya Shetty.
“It was a beautiful, intimate wedding. There were generations. The couple is officially married,” Sunil Shetty told reporters after the wedding.
Talking about KL Rahul, the Karnataka cricketer guided the Indian cricket team to victory over Sri Lanka in the second ODI earlier this month. Needing 216 runs to win at the prestigious Eden Gardens in Kolkata, the Men in Blue were in dire straits at 86/4.
But KL Rahul opened the innings and remained unbeaten on 64 to give India their second straight win over the Dasun Shanaka-led side.
After the match, KL Rahul said that he enjoyed batting on the pitch and was happy to lead the team to victory against the Indians.
“I wouldn’t say it was a flat wicket, but I can’t say it was impossible to bat either. It was a very sporty wicket. When we started, I thought it was 280-300 wickets. It didn’t move much, had a spongy bounce, not much else. We bowled really well to bowl them out for 215 runs. Good start again from the openers. They (Sri Lanka) put up a good fight. Got early success and put the pressure on us. A challenging game, we can be proud of the way we fought,” KL Rahul said at the post-match presentation ceremony.
“One thing I really like (about batting at No. 5) is that you don’t rush to bat (compared to the opener’s role). You can put your feet up, take a shower, eat a good meal and react to the situation. If the team wants me to bat at a certain strike rate, I try to do it to the best of my ability. My mindset is not to try to do what the team wants. At number five you will face spin, I like the ball coming to the bat. Ro (Rohit) has been very clear about where he wants me to bat (No. 5) and he has conveyed that to me,” explained KL Rahul.
Although he played a match-winning knock in Kolkata, he was dismissed cheaply in the next match at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram, scoring just 7 runs.
His poor performance in the final against Sri Lanka once again led to calls for him to be dropped from Team India, something that has been going on for some time now.
Since the T20 World Cup in Australia, many former cricketers have questioned his motives and approach in all three formats on the pitch. But former India opener Aakash Chopra has backed him to produce goods at No.5 for the two-time world champion.
“He’s doing what the team is asking him to do. That’s a big deal. The best opener would be for Rahul, but it is best for the team to bat at 5. I am sure he would have scored more centuries, probably double centuries as an opener. When you look at the Indian ODI setup, there is no place at the top. Kishan scored a double century, but he is not getting regular games. He doesn’t even open in all the matches,” Akash Chopra told Moneycontrol.com.
“He can bat lower down the order. You can’t say that for other people. Other players can bat at 1,2,3 but Rahul cannot be as successful at 5. It’s time we acknowledge what a good player he is,” Akash Chopra added.
